Ebook About
The unlikely, rocky relationship between an American country superstar and his straightlaced Canadian manager. Before there was Johnny and June, there was Johnny and Saul. The Man Who Carried Cash chronicles a relationship that was both volatile and affectionate between Johnny Cash and his manager, Saul Holiff. From roadside taverns to the roaring crowds at Madison Square Garden, from wrecked cars and jail cells all the way to the White House, the story of Johnny and Saul is a portrait of two men from different worlds who were more alike than either cared to admit.Saul handled the bookings and the no-shows, the divorce and the record deals, drugs, overdoses, and arrests. He was there for the absolute worst of times, but also for the best: Carnegie Hall, Folsom Prison, “A Boy Named Sue,” and Cash’s hit television series. But in 1973, at the zenith of Cash’s career, Saul quit. Until now, no one knew why.

Book The Man Who Carried Cash: Saul Holiff, Johnny Cash, and the Making of an American Icon Review :

This is an interesting book for several reasons. First of all, it gives an inside view of the business of promoting music stars on tour during the 60's and 70's. It was a madcap business in many ways since there were no national companies and managers and their stars had to deal individually with local kingpins, some of whom were gangsters. Holiff once was threatened by one such man who said he'd break his legs if Cash didn't make the show. It's interesting that the threat was directed toward Holiff and not Cash. There were no contracts as such and often no checks. Holiff carried around a briefcase filled with money to pay the performers at the end of each performance. Holiff was by all accounts an honest, conscientious man, respected by performers and most of the people he had to deal with. It's no wonder he was often under great stress. The second interesting aspect, and the real theme of the book, is the relationship between Cash and Holiff, especially during the earlier days when Cash was on drugs and could not be depended upon to show up for bookings. Holiff recognized the talent and stuck with him despite the difficulties. After Cash stopped the pills, different challenges arose, especially Cash's insistence, after his religious awakening, on doing more Gospel music and filming a life of Jesus in Israel. Holiff was cast as the high priest Caiphas and worried if John was sending him a not so subtle anti-Semitic message. Holiff, a secular and intellectual Jew, found it difficult to understand the evangelical fervor of a born again Southern Baptist. Overall the relationship had its ups and downs, until Holiff reached a point where he could take no more. His health was suffering, his family life was non- existent, his feelings of paranoia were increasing as he tried to deal with what he believed was undeserved criticism of his actions and his expectations to be compensated. I suppose the relations between any great star and his/her manager are fraught but the one between Cash and Holiff seemed to have more than its share. Holiff resigned and hoped the parting would be amicable. Well, yes and no. There were the inevitable disagreements over money and some personally directed pettiness, especially from June Carter Cash and John's sister Reba, but Cash later admitted that Holiff was the only one who could manage him. This relationship between a gifted and tormented Southern Baptist singer and composer and his more cerebral, equally tormented, Jewish Canadian manager makes for fascinating reading. Although this is not a biography as such, I was left with some questions at the end. Why did Holiff take his own life as chillingly described at the beginning? Was he ill? Severely depressed? No reasons are given. In the beginning Chadwick describes the horrific experiences of Holiff's mother and sister in the Ukraine before they were allowed to migrate to Canada to join his father (Saul Holiff was born in Canada afterward). What significance did these experiences have upon Saul himself? Little information is given about his mother and sister as he was growing up and his primary, and adversarial, relationship was with his autocratic father. Another question is if Saul and his son Jonathan were able to reconcile before Saul's death. The difficult relationship between the two mirrored that between Saul and his own father. I recommend this book for Cash fans, for readers who are interested in the music business, and for those who are interested in personal and professional relationships of artists and their managers, or of two very different men who worked together to insure the stardom of one.
A fascinating account of life as seen by the consummate insider of the career of Johnny Cash. Having read at least a dozen Cash biographies, I was amazed at the vast array of incidents of which I knew nothing. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Johnny Cash, or curious about popular music history in general.
